WINDHOEK

Windhoek’s charms can be elusive at first glance. Yet, the small capital has a lot to offer, and it’s the best stocking-up point before heading off to explore the rest of the country. The tidy and orderly central area is full of contrasts rooted in the troubled legacy of Namibia’s time as a German colony, with a mix of German and Namibian street names, neo-baroque cathedral spires, striking independence monuments and bold, modern architecture. Office workers lounge in the city’s parks at lunchtime, passersby admire woodcarvings and curios, and taxis whizz around honking at potential customers. On the outskirts, small, single-storey homes and zinc-roofed shops flank the streets, the air sizzles with spiced, grilled meat and street-side vendors hawk their wares. Rounding things out is a decent range of accommodation and restaurants and an amenable African urban buzz that gives the city a distinctive edge.
